Restoring hope with dignity

North Philadelphia TF-CBT Project

JJPI and SMASH (Strawberry Mansion: A Sanctuary of Hope) have partnered to provide community-based, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to children and adolescents residing in or attending school in North Central Philadelphia (zip codes 19121 and 19132). This collaborative program was created to stop the cycle of poverty and violence plaguing this area of Philadelphia by treating the effects of traumatic exposure in children and adolescents and reducing the likelihood of future behavioral health problems.

TF-CBT is a 16-week evidenced-based program that focuses on teaching children and their parents how to successfully manage symptoms of trauma. It has been shown to improve children’s overall behavioral health and educational outcomes and to reduce or eliminate their PTSD symptoms. Families attend sessions on a weekly basis and both children and parents have an opportunity to participate in therapy. TF-CBT includes a focus on teaching relaxation techniques, coping skills development, parenting skill development, and the writing of a trauma narrative to help understand and heal from the trauma. The program is open to children and adolescents, ages (3-17), living or attending school within zip codes 19121 or 19132 who have experienced trauma or who have witnessed or been victimized by violence. Services are completely free, regardless of participants’ ability to pay or their access to insurance, and are funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
